One of the newest resorts to open in Raja Ampat, Raja4Divers welcomed its first guest in June 2011, set on the private island of Pulau Pef 109km ENE from Sorong and 48KM south of the equator, in the centre of Raja Ampat. It is an immaculate island covered in lush virgin tropical jungle, made up of dazzling bays, many smaller islets, blue lagoons, white sand beaches, hidden lakes, ‘mushroom’ outcrops, ancient rock art on karst cliffs, pristine blue-water mangroves, and an incredible variety of exotic birds, monitor lizards and cuscus. The island is surrounded by the world’s richest reefs, with many varied habitats and offering a myriad of spectacular dive-sites.
Spread along a palm fringed, white sandy beach the seven Papuan style water bungalows stand on stilts, right over the water, with steps that lead down into the sea. The bungalows each measure 128sq/m the bedroom is 48sqm, with a 24 sq/m deck and 44sq/m open air bathroom. They are therefore extremely spacious, light and airy. Each bungalow is equipped with a mini fridge, water dispenser, writing desk, mini safe, Wi-Fi, large en-suite indoor/outdoor bathroom, hot and cold water, amenities, bath towels, swimming towels, and on the large deck: sun loungers, a hammock and steps into the water.
The design relies on proven traditional Papuan building methods, which have been blended with modern innovations in order to maximise the airflow and blend in with the natural surroundings.
The Restaurant is also set over the water and has commanding sunset views, it serves a mix of Indonesian and Western cuisine, using local ingredients and flavours to produce delicious food every meal. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style while dinner is plated, all meals are enjoyed on a large shared table where you can get to know your fellow guests and disclose the day’s adventures.
The Dive Centre is located in the main building, the wet/dry storage areas are conveniently at the end of the jetty, where the dive boats are docked. Rental gear is available in the Dive Centre as well as a library of marine reference guides. Underwater photographers will find an air conditioned camera room supplied with a 27″ iMac which is for all to use freely.
Diving in Raja Ampat is spectacular. Scientists call it the major hotspot for marine biodiversity in the world, you will find more than 1400 fish species in Raja Ampat which is almost as many as in the whole Coral Triangle. On Pef you can start your dive adventure right off the jetty on the house reef or behind the resort in the Silent Bay for an exciting Mangrove dive. Everything is here – from the tiny pygmy seahorse right to the patrolling black tip reef shark.
There are many more activities other than diving to be relished in this unique and exciting island, you can enjoy trekking across the island on the numerous jungle trails, to encounter its varied flora and fauna and discover spectacular views from the hills above the resort some 40m above sea level and an endless view over the ocean. Or you can kayak around the island using either the single or double kayaks available to find all of the secret places from the hidden lake, ancient handprints, and mangrove tunnels to the remote beaches that make up the island chain.
